How to Stain Wood using a Water based Wood Stain
Staining bare wood furniture
Because bare wood hasn’t absorbed any finish yet, proper prep is key to getting flawless results. Just make sure the surface is clean, dry, and free of dust, dirt, or grease—that’s all it takes! Once your wood is prepped and ready, it’s time to mix up your stain and bring that beautiful grain to life.
Staining previously painted, stained or varnished furniture
If your wood surface is already coated with stain, varnish, or another finish, it’s essential to remove it completely and get back to bare wood. That means stripping off all previous layers—no shortcuts! For this step, you’ll need a quality stripper, along with protective eyewear, gloves, and clothing to shield your skin. And if you have respiratory sensitivities, we highly recommend wearing a chemical filter mask for added safety.
Application is simple: pour a generous layer directly onto the surface, then spread it evenly with a ¼" notched trowel. Let the product work its magic as directed, then scrape in the direction of the wood grain to lift away the old finish. Rinse off any remaining residue, and repeat the process if needed.
Sanding a wooden furniture and preparing the surface
Now that your wood is stripped down to its natural state, it’s time to sand the surface for a flawless finish. Sanding removes any remaining irregularities and ensures your stain absorbs evenly and beautifully into the wood.
Using 120–150 grit sandpaper, gently sand in the direction of the grain until the surface feels completely smooth and free of imperfections. This step is essential for achieving that professional, even-toned look you’ll love!
Preparation of the mixture
It’s finally time to stain—let the fun begin! Got bold, original color ideas for your next makeover project? Perfect. SamaN has you covered with a stunning palette of 40 water-based stain colors that can be blended to create your own custom tints.
Creating your dream color is simple. Just follow the easy-to-use mixing chart, and combine your chosen stains using the graduated container included in the SamaN Mixing Kit (60-003). Whether you're going for subtle and natural or rich and dramatic, your perfect shade is just a mix away.
Test the color of the stain
Want stunning, long-lasting results you’ll be proud to show off—especially after staining all 35 of your kitchen cabinets? Of course you do! But before diving in, a quick test is key.
Start by stirring your stain thoroughly to ensure the pigments are evenly mixed—don’t skip this step, as the rich color lives at the bottom of the can! Then, test the stain on a hidden area of your project. Color results can vary depending on the wood species and how it was sanded, so this step ensures you're happy with the final look.
Once you're in love with the color—go for it! You're one step closer to a beautiful, professional-grade finish.
Apply the stain onto the wood
The moment you’ve been waiting for is here—it’s time to stain your cherished furniture and cabinetry! With SamaN’s water-based stains, achieving a flawless finish couldn’t be easier. Just one coat is all it takes for rich, even color.
Here’s how: Pour a small amount of stain onto the sponge included in the SamaN Application Kit, and apply it smoothly across the surface. Then, simply wipe off any excess with a clean, soft cloth. That’s it!
Now, let it dry for just one hour, and your beautiful new look will start to shine through. Effortless application, professional results—just the way it should be.
Protect your work with a varnish
Congratulations! You’ve come a long way, and staining wood no longer holds any secrets for you. Now, there’s just one important step left to fully protect and showcase your beautiful furniture: varnishing.
SamaN offers four stunning varnish finishes to suit your style—satin, semi-gloss, gloss, and matte—so you can choose the perfect look for your project.
For best results, apply 2 to 3 even coats of SamaN water-based or hybrid varnish, always following the direction of the wood grain. Use a high-quality brush or a 6 mm lint-free roller for a smooth finish. Between each coat, lightly sand with 220 grit sandpaper, then vacuum and wipe down with a clean, damp cloth to remove any dust or residue. Repeat this process for each coat to achieve a flawless, durable finish.
Your new colors will stay vibrant and protected for years to come, thanks to SamaN varnishes that guard against wear, scratches, temperature changes, and harmful UV rays.
