Spring clean-up: where to start

After a long winter and as the weather warms up into spring, Canadians start venturing outside. With this change of seasons, you can take advantage of the longer, warmer days by beginning your outdoor spring clean-up. Getting your property cleaned up now will make a big difference in how your property looks.

 

 Yard Clean Up

  •  Rake Excess Leaves 

On one of the first dry days, its a good idea to rake any leaves left over from Fall. We recommend using a large poly leaf rake like this one. 

  • Check for Litter

Over winter, Litter can pile up around your curb or where snow is pushed. Once the snow has melted its a good idea to take walk around and pick up any litter you see. 

 

Gardens

  •  Clear Garden Beds

Pull out and weeds that may have started growing in your gardens and any dead leave that may have found their way into them. 

  • Replace any Missing Aggregate

Over the winter months its not uncommon for Mulch or rocks to go missing, spring is a good time to replace any missing Mulch or Stones. 


Patio & House

  • Wash Driveway and Patios

After Sweeping your Driveway and Paths, it is a good idea to pressure wash them make sure to use safe pressure and the proper nozzle and the proper cleansers. We recommend using the Bosch Aquatak Pressure washers and the Wash safe mold and mildew Wash.

  • Clean Windows and Screens

 Windows and screens accumulate grime over the winter and cleaning them will allow more light into your home. Using a squeegee on a cloudy day will reduce streaks on the glass and will speed up the process.

Use Soap and Water to clean the Fiberglass or Aluminum Screen so you get a unobstructed views for the upcoming summer months.

  •  Wash House and Garage

Over the winter, and throughout the years the outside of your house and garage can accumulate surface contaminates like mold, algae, and dirt. We recommend using Wash safe House mold and mildew wash.

  •  Wash Deck

Just like the exterior of your home or garage your deck can accumulate surface contaminates pressure washing and using a cleaner like Wash Safe All Wood Wash on your deck can keep it looking like new and maintaining a clean deck can increase its longevity.

Check the surface of your deck in case you need to re-stain or paint. Spring is the best time to do this as it's before you will want to entertain or enjoy the outside with friends. We recommend Cabot Exterior Deck Stain.

House and Garage Roofs

  • Check Roof

If you notice any black streaking or moss on your roof, you should have those addressed as soon as possible. The black streaking can eat away at the granules within shingles and cause deterioration over time. Any moss on the roof will embed its roots into the shingles and possibly cause leaks.

Use a pressure washer like the Bosch Aquatak and a soft wash cleaner like Wash Safe Roof Wash to clean away and surface Contaminants. If you find that your getting moss every year on your roof you can try to install a Zinc Strip around the exterior edge of your roof which will help reduce moss making its way onto your roof to grow.

  •  Check Gutters

Debris will always find it's way into your gutters unless you have a gutter screen system installed like this one. This system is easy to install as it just slides into your existing gutter. If you find a Clog try to remove the debris as safely as possible if your gutter is dry you could try this nozzle attachment for a Makita Leaf Blower to easily remove debris from your gutters from the ground. If you find to many clogs for you to handle safely you can always hire a gutter cleaning company.
