What's Growing On My Roof

Generally organic growth on a roof is one or a mix of the following,

Algae

Algae on a roof appears as a thin green coating and is primarily a cosmetic rather than destructive issue. Removal is easy with a single application of Oxy All Roof solution,

Black Algae

Black Algae is also a cosmetic issue, but can be very difficult to remove. It may take several applications of Oxy All Roof Wash, and can take longer to wash away. If immediate removal is desired, try a light pressure washing of 1000psi.

Lichen

Lichen are very stubborn and tough to remove. Their presence can cause problems over time as they retain moisture against the roof surface and can accelerate granule loss on asphalt shingles. they are considered a cosmetic issue as well.

Moss

Moss is the one to really watch out for, particularly on asphalt or wooden shingles where it can send roots right into the fabric of the shingle. Moss is 99% water and holds enormous amounts of moisture against and into shingles. In colder temperatures it can freeze and actually pop roof nails. Moss also eats away the granules on asphalt shingles and rots wood shingles, both  resulting int premature roof failure. some insurance companies do not protect against roofs badly contaminated with moss considering it a "failure to maintain". You should remove moss as soon as you notice it.

Cleaning Instructions

Equipment Needed 

• Oxy All Roof Wash
• Garden Type Hand Sprayer
• Bucket for mixing or barrel, water transfer pump, pressure washer, hose, and nozzle.
  
• (Optional) Pressure Washer for Hard to remove Applications

Instructions

1. In a bucket, mix Oxy All Roof Wash according to instructions on the container.
2. Spray the solution onto the roof using a hand pump sprayer, starting at the peak and working your way down, following the foam. (if possible, sweep and large clumps growing on your roof before spraying to help the solutions reach the roots of the growth)
3. Let Mother nature wash everything away over the next 4-6 weeks or for a more immediate clean very lightly rinse off the cleaning solution downwards with a pressure washer aet at less than 1000psi
   
4. For large surfaces, mix the solution in a garbage can or barrel connect a transfer pump to a garden hose and nozzle and then spray solution onto the roof.
    

 

Pro Tip 

Avoid letting the spray dry on any window surface as it leaves a film that is quite difficult to remove. if there is a possibility of getting on glass, simply wet the glass down before a praying then rinse again after.

If there are delicate flowers where you are working that could get over spray, wet the blossoms down before and after, or cover.

Avoid getting spray on eyeglasses as it may remove some anti-glare coatings.
